Plan a compatible PC upgrade

Find the bottleneck

Check which component limits your usual tasks. More memory helps when applications run out of RAM; an SSD improves storage responsiveness. A graphics upgrade helps workloads that use the GPU.

Verify compatibility first

Match CPU socket and motherboard support, including the BIOS version. Check RAM generation, available slots and supported capacity. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable.

Measure power and space

Check case clearance, cooling and the power supply’s connectors and capacity. Back up data before replacing storage. Compare specifications for the exact component model.
